The upcoming UFC Freedom 250 main event has Usman Nurmagomedov questioning the hype surrounding the fight between lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and interim champ Justin Gaethje. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Nurmagomedov, the PFL lightweight champion, drew comparisons to his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov's historic fight with Conor McGregor, which generated immense interest and pay-per-view sales.
"The contrast is stark," Nurmagomedov remarked. "When Khabib fought McGregor, it was an event that transcended the sport. Everyone, from kids to grandparents, knew about it. Even royalty took notice. But with UFC Freedom 250, there's a notable lack of buzz."
One possible reason for the disparity, according to Nurmagomedov, is the relative obscurity of Topuria. "He's not a household name yet," Nurmagomedov explained. "And the lightweight division in the UFC seems to have lost some of its allure."
However, Nurmagomedov isn't entirely discounting Gaethje's chances in the fight. "Gaethje is an underdog, but he has the skills to pull off an upset," Nurmagomedov said. "Topuria's style can be exploited. With the right strategy, Gaethje could make it a competitive bout."
This fight, and the lack of hype surrounding it, raises questions about the state of the lightweight division and the UFC's ability to create blockbuster events. Nurmagomedov believes that with the right talent and promotion, the division can regain its former glory. "I have faith that with the right ingredients, the lightweight division can once again capture the imagination of fans worldwide," he concluded.
